The aim of this paper is to analyze the question of electric energy in the Northeast of Brazil in three points: (1) history of the Brazilian Northeast electrification (1905-1965) (2) The struggle of Sudene (Superintendence for the Development of the Northeast) to electrify the region, mainly in the rural areas (1960-2000), (3) current situation of the electric system of Brazilian Northeast emphasizing alternative and sustainable energy sources like solar and wind power.
