This article aims to provide a brief historical overview of the São Francisco basin over the 1960s. The region has experienced an intense process of transformation and diversification of its economy since the involvement of both national political actors – such as the federal government, Sudene and Suvale – as well as international organizations, such as the UN and FAO, and the development of bold irrigation projects alongside the river surroundings.
